| I
will warn you now that Fiji can be VERY HOT & HUMID! When we
went it was over 30'c every day (which is fine) but was 85-90% humidity
(which isn't)!
On
the main island (Viti Lavu) we visited villages in the Nausori Highlands
where we tried
bamboo rafting (bilibili) and our first Kava ceremony! Suva is a
good place to go for a Maccas if you need to stock up on junk food
but watch out for the Sword sellers and drug dealers - they can
spot tourists a mile off. If anyone starts chatting to you whilst
carving onto a bit of wood, move on quickly. They are sword sellers
and will try & con you out of money.
Kava (yanggona) is a tranquillising drink that comes from the dried
root of the pepper plant and looks like muddy water. The taste isn't
much better either but it gives the tongue a tingling sensation.
I don't recommend
that you take any out of the country as it is classed as a narcotic
elsewhere! Do BE AWARE that Kava is where my brother & I believe
we contracted giardiasis (a very very unpleasant infection of the
digestive system).
Snorkelling in Fiji is absolutely incredible. The water is warm
(constant temp of 25-28'c), many types of coral, amazing array of
fish. This is where I saw my first black-tipped reef shark! I'd
recommend it!
